FEDERAL WORKPLACES

The higher-rate rule

The federal minimum wage applies only to federally regulated workplaces. If the minimum wage in the province or territory where an employee usually works is higher, the employer must pay that higher rate.

KNOW THE SCOPE

General rates have exceptions

Special rules can apply to students, homeworkers, tipped employees, piecework and specific occupations. Each detail page links to the official authority; unknown special rates are not substituted for the general rate.
